Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Data Streaming
Skills
About the role
This is a senior backend engineering role on Camunda's new Data Streaming team, building a greenfield streaming layer that lets customers pull their process data out of Camunda into their own systems. It suits a Java backend engineer with distributed systems experience who wants to help design a new architecture from scratch rather than extend an existing one. The role is fully remote and open globally.
What you’ll do
- Design and build core streaming infrastructure decoupling process data access from the live execution engine
- Build customer-facing streaming capabilities, including integration with systems like Kafka
- Help rebuild how Camunda's analytics product consumes and serves process data at scale
- Make foundational architecture decisions on consistency and durability across a distributed streaming pipeline
- Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations investigating data layer production issues
What they’re looking for
- 7+ years of backend engineering experience in Java, with a focus on distributed or data-intensive systems
- Hands-on experience with object storage systems (S3, GCS, Azure or similar) and idempotent upload/commit protocols
- Experience with Kafka or a similar streaming/event-log system
- Solid grounding in distributed systems fundamentals
- A track record of driving a technical initiative through ambiguity in a still-being-designed system
- Experience leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives (3+ months) end to end
- Strong communication skills in a remote-first environment
Nice to have
- Experience with Apache Iceberg, Parquet or lakehouse/data-lake architectures
- Experience with embedded state stores such as RocksDB
- Experience with stream processing frameworks like Apache Flink
- Familiarity with object-storage-native streaming architectures such as WarpStream
What’s on offer
- Fully remote, global role
- US salary range of $143,800 to $231,900 total target cash
- Equity through a Virtual Stock Option Plan
- Home office budget and co-working space support
- Flexible time off
- Annual company kickoff and team offsites
- Locally tailored healthcare and mental wellbeing support
- Retirement and pension plans
- Up to $1,000 per year for self-driven learning
