About the role
This is a senior backend engineering role on Camunda's Data Layer team, building the storage and query layer that keeps Camunda 8's process data fast, accurate and available at scale. It suits a backend engineer with deep relational database and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch experience who wants to work on high-scale secondary storage systems. The role is fully remote and open globally.
What you’ll do
- Design, build and maintain backend services for the data layer spanning relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch
- Own end-to-end delivery of engineering initiatives from requirements to solution design to delivery
- Help evolve how process data is processed, retained and exposed to customers
- Improve performance and scalability of secondary storage systems as usage grows
- Build tooling to understand, troubleshoot and safely operate the data layer in production
- Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations investigating data layer production issues
What they’re looking for
- At least 7 years of backend engineering experience with a focus on production data stores
- Deep experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB or MSSQL) and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch
- Practical understanding of query performance, indexing and data modeling trade-offs
- Experience leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives (3+ months) end to end
- Comfort investigating slow queries, execution plans and index usage to root-cause issues
- Strong communication skills in a remote-first environment
Nice to have
- Experience building workflow automation or process orchestration software
- Experience with both relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch
- Experience building or maintaining CI pipelines
- Understanding of database migration tooling such as Liquibase or Flyway
