Software Engineer, Backend - Core/API & Process Automation
Skills
About the role
This is a backend engineering role at Camunda, fully remote and open worldwide. You'll work on the core event-sourced workflow engine (Zeebe) that powers Camunda 8's business process automation for thousands of customers. It suits an engineer early in their backend career who wants to go deep on distributed systems, event sourcing, and API design rather than build another CRUD app.
What you’ll do
- Build and evolve features in the event-sourced engine and its REST/gRPC/MCP API.
- Own well-scoped work end-to-end: implement, test, ship, and write design notes.
- Help ship engine features like suspending/resuming process instances and enabling AI agents to steer running processes.
- Design and consume clean, backward-compatible APIs.
- Detect and optimize inefficient data-access patterns across RocksDB, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, and Postgres.
- Flag issues and tech debt, participate in reviews, testing, and on-call as you ramp up.
What they’re looking for
- 2+ years of professional backend engineering experience.
- Solid grasp of event-driven systems and eagerness to go deep on event sourcing and distributed systems.
- Good REST API design instincts with awareness of backward compatibility.
- Strong self-direction in a remote/async setting.
- Clear written communication.
Nice to have
- Experience with workflow automation or process orchestration (BPMN or similar).
- Comfort with query patterns in Elasticsearch/OpenSearch and relational/Postgres.
- Familiarity with observability tooling.
- Working JVM knowledge.
What’s on offer
- US pay range $119,900-$193,200; UK £75,300-£123,800; Singapore S$148,900-S$223,300 (total target cash).
- Equity through a Virtual Stock Option Plan.
- Remote and flexible work with home office budget and co-working support.
- Annual Kickoff and team offsites.
- Healthcare, mental wellbeing support, and a lifestyle spending account.
- Retirement/pension plans and life/disability insurance where relevant.
- Up to $1,000/year for self-driven learning.
