About the role
This is a Senior Data Engineer role on Shopify's Data Platform Engineering group, open remotely across the Americas. It suits an experienced data or software engineer who wants to work on the data lake, analytics pipelines, BI tooling or platform reliability that powers Shopify's merchant-facing decision-making. The role sits across several teams — Engine, Analytics, Data Experiences and Reliability — each responsible for a different layer of the data platform.
What you’ll do
- Build and maintain highly-optimized data lake formats for fast query processing
- Build products that enable scalable batch, streaming or ML data transformation
- Build end-user experiences for experimentation, data discovery and BI reporting
- Operate the data platform reliably and build tools that encourage consistency across teams
What they’re looking for
- 4-6 years of experience in one or more relevant data engineering areas
- Experience with the internals of a distributed compute engine (Spark, Presto, DBT or Flink/Beam)
- Experience with query optimization, resource allocation and data lake performance
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Terraform)
- Solid software engineering experience building and maintaining systems at scale
- Exceptional communication skills to translate technical concepts for stakeholders
- Comfort working on a fully remote team
Nice to have
- Experience with security products and methods (Apache Ranger, Apache Knox, OAuth, IAM, Kerberos)
- Experience deploying and scaling ML solutions (MLFlow, TFX, H2O)
- Experience building full-stack applications (Ruby/Rails, React, TypeScript)
- Background in statistics or computational mathematics
- Experience with modern big-data storage technologies (Iceberg, Hudi, Delta)
