About the role
This is a Staff Software Developer role on Shopify's Data Platform Engineering group, remote across the Americas. It suits a senior technical leader with 6-10 years of experience who wants to shape data lake, analytics or platform reliability systems while mentoring other engineers. The role spans work across the Engine, Analytics, Data Experiences and Reliability teams that make up the data platform.
What you’ll do
- Work on distributed compute engine internals and data lake performance
- Contribute across cloud infrastructure, security or ML deployment areas of the platform
- Mentor and coach engineers, improving the technical output of those around you
- Deliver impactful results as an experienced technical leader
What they’re looking for
- 6-10 years of experience in relevant data platform engineering areas
- Experience with the internals of a distributed compute engine (Spark, Presto, DBT or Flink/Beam)
- Experience with query optimization and data lake performance (Presto, SQL)
- Experience with cloud infrastructure (Google Cloud, Kubernetes, Terraform)
- Experience with technical mentoring and coaching of other engineers
- Exceptional communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Comfort working on a fully remote team
Nice to have
- Experience with security products and methods (Apache Ranger, Apache Knox, OAuth, IAM, Kerberos)
- Experience deploying and scaling ML solutions (MLFlow, TFX, H2O)
- Experience building full-stack applications (Ruby/Rails, React, TypeScript)
- Background in statistics or computational mathematics
- Modern big-data storage technologies (Iceberg, Hudi, Delta)
