About the role
This is a Data Development Manager role leading the Insights team's data developers at Shopify, remote across the Americas. It suits an experienced engineering manager who wants to blend hands-on technical guidance with team leadership, building data products that guide merchants toward their next best action. The role collaborates closely with data scientists, engineers, product and UX leads within the Insights group.
What you’ll do
- Manage a team of data developers, helping them prioritize, build and ship impactful features
- Build prototypes, contribute to reviews and set standards of operation for the team
- Advocate for cross-discipline collaboration and reliable data pipelines
- Grow and build a high-performing data development team through hiring and development

- Proven experience managing data development teams with a strong focus on business impact
- Experience building data pipelines and driving ETL design decisions
- Proven technical leadership skills with technologies similar to Shopify's stack
- Experience hiring and mentoring data-focused engineers and managers
- Highly technical, familiar with the full data stack from acquisition to serving
- Exceptional communication skills for technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to design cross-org performance metrics and turn them into roadmaps
Nice to have
- Deep expertise in Spark or related large-scale batch processing engines
- Comfort with a streaming processing engine (Flink, Dataflow, Kafka Streams)
- Deep understanding of advanced SQL and Python techniques
- Domain experience in e-commerce, SaaS or retail analytics
- Understanding of recency, latency, performance, efficiency and change management
