About the role
GitLab is hiring a staff backend engineer for a full-time remote role in India. The role is for an experienced technical leader who can guide cross-team modernization, backend architecture, and production standards. You’ll help move large legacy systems toward modular designs while balancing delivery, reliability, security, and long-term platform health. The work includes technical leadership, on-call participation, mentoring, and safe adoption of AI-assisted engineering workflows.
What you’ll do
- Lead technical design and delivery for backend initiatives spanning multiple teams.
- Guide modularization of monolith and legacy backend systems.
- Set standards for APIs, data ownership, testing, security, observability, releases, and rollback.
- Create patterns for dependency management, eventing, failure isolation, and service operations.
- Participate in on-call and incident response for owned systems.
- Mentor engineers and improve shared engineering practices.
- Lead adoption of AI-assisted and agentic workflows with quality and security controls.

- Deep production backend-architecture experience in complex applications, services, or platforms.
- Experience modernizing monoliths or legacy backends into modular systems.
- Ability to build alignment through written proposals and documented decisions.
- Strong product judgment and engineering mentorship experience.
- Production experience guiding AI-assisted or agentic engineering practices.

- Security-sensitive software or supply-chain engineering experience.
