Senior Backend Engineer - Architecture Engineering: Nonlinear Productivity
Skills
About the role
This is a senior backend engineering role on GitLab's Nonlinear Productivity team, open to candidates in the US or Canada. You'll build reliable AI-powered automation that removes friction across GitLab's own software development lifecycle, such as speeding up code review and automating release steps. It suits an engineer who has shipped production agentic or LLM-based systems and wants to define a new problem space from scratch rather than join an established roadmap.
What you’ll do
- Identify friction points across the SDLC and scope agentic solutions to address them.
- Design and build reliable AI-powered systems with tool use, safety checks, and error correction.
- Build and maintain evaluation tools that judge agent output on correctness and cost.
- Work across GitLab's codebase wherever a problem requires.
- Apply distributed systems judgment to catch failures before they reach customers.
- Collaborate with the India-based sister team on roadmap and shared tooling.
What they’re looking for
- Hands-on experience building agentic or LLM-based systems in production, including orchestration, tool use, guardrails, and recovery.
- A track record of working autonomously in unfamiliar codebases.
- Strong distributed systems knowledge: coordination, consistency, idempotency, rate limiting, failure modes.
- Proficiency in Go, Rust, or Python, with ability to read and modify the other two.
Nice to have
- Experience shipping autonomous agents that complete real tasks end to end.
- Experience improving build systems, release processes, or review workflows.
- Experience working with globally distributed teams or LLM workload costs and production constraints across deployment types.
What’s on offer
- US base salary range $139,200-$235,200.
- Flexible paid time off.
- Equity compensation and employee stock purchase plan.
- Growth and development fund.
- Parental leave.
