About the role
Coinbase is hiring a Senior Staff Software Engineer to own Identity and Access Management strategy across the platform. You will unify workforce, AI agent, service, and workload identity into a single coherent system used by hundreds of engineering teams. This is a remote role open to candidates worldwide, with quarterly in-person working sessions called surges.
What you’ll do
- Own the multi-year technical strategy for IAM, unifying workforce, AI agent, and service/workload identity under a common model.
- Drive architecture decisions across multiple pods and teams you do not manage, establishing standards and integration contracts.
- Build an adoption strategy for 700+ systems with sequencing, migration paths, and build-versus-buy decisions.
- Partner with Security, Compliance, and IT to translate regulatory requirements into automated controls and self-generating evidence.
- Lead the data model answering who has access to what and why across a heterogeneous system estate.
- Mentor staff and senior engineers while raising organizational depth in identity as a domain.
- Utilize generative AI responsibly to drive improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
What they’re looking for
- 12 or more years of software engineering experience with a track record as the most senior technical voice on a multi-team platform.
- Deep IAM expertise across at least one domain such as workforce identity, authorization, access lifecycle, or non-human identity.
- Production Go experience and distributed systems design on AWS.
- Fluency in identity protocols and standards: OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, SCIM, and workload identity patterns.
- Proven influence without authority at senior levels across teams outside your direct reports.
- Ability to translate audit and regulatory requirements into automated technical controls.
