About the role
This is a 12-month onsite contract for a senior data scientist supporting a public-sector client in Toronto through Lotus IT Solutions. You'll analyze large government datasets, build predictive models, and deliver insights supporting evidence-based decisions across programs. It suits an experienced data scientist with public-sector or OPS experience and geospatial analysis skills.
What you’ll do
- Analyze complex, large-scale datasets to generate predictive models and insights
- Apply statistical methods, machine learning, and programming to interpret data
- Initiate and manage new information studies and statistical models
- Conduct exploratory analyses to identify patterns and trends
- Support data migration, digitization, and modernization initiatives
- Analyze spatial and non-spatial datasets for planning and compliance
- Develop predictive models, analytical frameworks, and geospatial analysis techniques
- Prepare technical documentation, data dictionaries, and data flow diagrams
- Communicate analytical and geospatial findings through reports and dashboards
What they’re looking for
- Knowledge of data analytics including relational databases and geospatial analysis
- Proficiency with tools such as Power BI, Tableau, R Shiny, or ArcGIS
- Ability to analyze and integrate spatial and non-spatial datasets
- Proficiency in SQL for data extraction and transformation
- Proficiency in Python or R for data analysis and automation
- Knowledge of data governance, ETL processes, and data warehousing
- Proficiency in statistical analysis, data mining, and predictive analytics
- Experience with version control systems such as Git
- Required: Ontario Public Service / public sector experience
Nice to have
- Advanced degree in social science, statistics, or a related field
- Certifications such as IBM Data Science Professional Certificate or Google Data Engineer
- Experience working within Ontario Public Service or broader public sector
- Familiarity with GO-ITS standards and data governance frameworks
- Project management experience in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment
