About the role
This lead software engineer role focuses on designing and maintaining scalable back-end services and core software components for an AI company. You'll lead technical architecture decisions, mentor other engineers, and establish development best practices in a remote Canadian team.
What you’ll do
- Design, build, and maintain scalable back-end services and core software components
- Lead technical architecture decisions across services and APIs
- Guide implementation of software systems and ensure code quality, performance, and reliability
- Mentor other engineers and review code
- Establish best practices for software development and deployment
- Collaborate with product and research teams to translate requirements into technical solutions
- Improve existing systems and contribute to long-term technical strategy
- Drive continuous improvement in development processes, testing, and observability

- Strong foundation in Computer Science including data structures, algorithms, and systems design
- Proficiency in Software Development with experience shipping production-quality software
- Hands-on experience in Back-End Web Development including APIs, microservices, and data systems integration
- Solid understanding and practical use of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) principles
- Experience leading engineering projects or teams with ability to make architectural decisions
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines
- Hands-on experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Comfort working in a remote, distributed team environment
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
- 5+ years of relevant experience
