CNC Set-Up Machinist/Operator

About the role

This is a full-time CNC machining role with VetPowered in San Diego, California. It suits a machinist with independent production setup experience on CNC mills or lathes, especially Haas or FANUC-controlled equipment. You will prepare jobs, validate programs, inspect first parts, monitor production, and document setups for future runs. VetPowered provides advanced manufacturing, repair, fabrication, and training services.

What you’ll do

  • Set up CNC mills and lathes using the required workholding, tooling, offsets, and program revisions.
  • Verify G-code and use approved prove-out steps before releasing work to production.
  • Inspect first articles and adjust feeds, speeds, tooling, or offsets within approved limits.
  • Monitor machining cycles, tool condition, coolant, chip control, finishes, and dimensions.
  • Read drawings, GD&T, specifications, setup instructions, and inspection requirements.
  • Record setup details, inspection results, labor entries, and job notes.
  • Maintain traceability and promptly escalate nonconforming work or missing documentation.
  • Follow safety, lockout/tagout, PPE, and workplace-organization procedures.

What they’re looking for

  • At least three years of CNC machining experience with independent setup and production operation.
  • Hands-on experience with Haas and/or FANUC CNC controls.
  • Knowledge of G-code, tooling, workholding, cutting parameters, and safe prove-out practices.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and work instructions.
  • Proficiency with precision inspection tools and in-process measurement.
  • Experience troubleshooting machining variation, tool wear, alarms, and related issues.

Nice to have

  • Experience with both Haas and FANUC controls.
  • Four-axis or five-axis machining experience.
  • Familiarity with Fusion 360, Mastercam, or similar CAM software.
  • Experience in an AS9100 or comparable quality system.
  • Experience with JobBOSS, Paperless Parts, ProShop, or UniPoint.
