About the role
This is a principal-level backend engineering role at Toast, a restaurant technology company, focused on international expansion. You'll lead development of an AI-powered integration harness that speeds up connecting the platform to partner software, working remotely from Canada with East Coast hours preferred. What you’ll do
- Architect and maintain an AI-driven harness for integrating and maintaining external partner connections
- Set technical strategy for international expansion challenges across regions
- Lead cross-functional teams of developers, product managers, designers and researchers on partner integration infrastructure
- Mentor engineers through code pairing and architecture reviews
- Establish best practices for development, deployment and quality
- Write, review and ship code, and iterate based on customer feedback
- Work with UX, product, QA and partner engineering teams on delivery
- Use AI tools to speed up personal and team development
What they’re looking for
- 10+ years building and operating large-scale, mission-critical distributed systems or SaaS, ideally on AWS
- A track record leading complex technical initiatives from design through production
- Enthusiasm for agentic development practices and LLM integration
- Ability to work at both architectural and code level
- Strong communication skills across technical and product audiences
Nice to have
- Experience building development harnesses using LLMs or autonomous agents
- Hands-on work with integration frameworks like Apache Camel or event-driven messaging such as Apache Pulsar
- Experience setting up CI/CD and testing pipelines at scale
